Using Variables in Templates

Xponent Communications Control (XCC) contains functionality for user variables. Variables are useful in personalizing your messages.

For example, instead of addressing the recipient as "Dear Customer," you may want to address the recipient by their first name.

Other examples of variables might include a customer's address, account number, or phone number.

Your organization works with CSG to establish the variables available to you.

A variable appears in your template with a pair of set brackets at the beginning and end of the variable name. For example, a first name variable might appear as {{NAME_FIRST}}.

Following is an example of how the body of an email informing a customer their new credit card was delivered might look using a first name, credit card expiration date, and a web site address:

The following content elements support variable insertion:

  • TITLE

  • PARAGRAPH

  • LIST

Perform the following steps to insert a variable into a template:

  1. Create a new or open an existing template.

  2. Add a new TITLE, PARAGRAPH, or LIST row if one does not exist.

  3. Click a TITLE, PARAGRAPH, or LIST row to display a list of formatting options.

  4. Click the Merge Tags option. A list of available variables displays.

  5. Click a variable to add it to your template.

Creating a Variable

  1. In the message stage, click on the + icon to add a new variable. An Add Variable pop-up will appear.

  2. Enter the variable name. This name will appear in your message template once added.

  3. Enter the value for the variable that you want to display when viewing the message in Preview mode.

  4. Click Add to create the variable, making it available for insertion in your message template.

Editing a Variable

  1. To edit an existing variable, click the pencil icon next to the variable.

  2. Make the necessary changes to the value and click Add.

Note

The variable name cannot be changed in the Edit Variable pop-up. Once the value is updated, it will immediately reflect in the message preview.

Deleting a Variable

1. To delete a variable, click on the delete icon located in front of the variable at the bottom left-hand side of the page.

2. Deleting the inserted variable from the message template will remove the variable's value in the message preview.

3. After deletion, you will only see the variable name enclosed between two brackets.

Inserting the Variable in the Template

  1. To insert a variable in your SMS/MMS message template, type two opening brackets “{{“. A list of available variables will appear.

  2. Select the desired variable. The variable will automatically close with two brackets, and its value will be visible in the Preview mode.

For Example: Entering {{BRAND}} will display "Yphone" in the preview.
